A Voyage to the Past: An Afternoon in the King’s Realm

A place where time doth stand still, and the echoes of the renaissance era resonate through the cobbled paths and verdant fields. If thou hast ever fancied thyself a lord or lady, a gallant knight or a fair damsel, this renaissance festival is thy portal to a world of yore. Join me as I recount an afternoon filled with merriment and marvels, where the past cometh alive in vivid hues and vibrant sounds.

Arrival and the Splendid Welcome
Upon our arrival at the Scarborough Renaissance Festival in the town of Waxahachie, Texas, the sight that greeted us was nothing short of a spectacle. A fleet of bike taxis stood ready to whisk guests to and fro the distant parking lot, a convenience much appreciated by those who preferred not to tread the long path. For the young squires and maidens, covered wagon rentals were available beside the ticket office, providing a delightful conveyance akin to the carriages of yesteryears.
As we crossed the threshold into this magical realm, a costume rental shop beckoned just inside the entrance. Here, one could don the garb befitting a character from a bygone age. The pièce de résistance, however, was a colossal sculpture of the legendary Excalibur Sword, gleaming majestically in the midday sun. This iconic symbol of chivalry set the tone for the adventures that lay ahead.
A Cornucopia of Stage Performances
The festival grounds were alive with the sounds of laughter and applause as stage performances unfolded at every turn. With an abundance of shows, it was nigh impossible to witness them all in a single day. Our journey began with The Birds of Prey show offered a glimpse into the avian world as majestic falcons soared above the heads of the awestruck crowd.
Next, we witnessed the exhilarating Adam Crack’s Fire Whip Show, where flames danced in tandem with the crack of the whip, leaving the audience spellbound. We thence marveled at the daring feats of The Joust, where armored knights clashed in a display of valor and skill.
We caught a fleeting moment of the Star Dancers Belly Dancing, a mesmerizing performance that transported us to faraway lands. Our exploration continued with a peek into the whimsical Cirqa Brava Circus Show and the enchanting melodies of The Foxy Bard, each adding their unique flavor to the festival's tapestry.

A Meeting with Sir Real, the Puppet Man
As we wandered through the bustling lanes, we encountered the delightful Gabriel Quirk, known to many as Sir Real, the Puppet Man. His character, 'Baby', a jester baby perched in a high-chair atop walking stilts, captivated all who crossed his path. With a playful demeanor and quick wit, Sir Real engaged passersby in jovial banter, leaving a trail of smiles in his wake.

Celtic Weekend Revelry
Fortuitously, our visit coincided with the much-celebrated 'Celtic Weekend'. The air was filled with the stirring notes of Amazing Grace, performed by The Rogues, a band hailed as "America's Celtic Music Band." Their rousing rendition resonated with the spirit of the festival, drawing all within earshot into a joyous celebration of Celtic heritage.

The Art of Glass Blowing
Our journey took us to the heart of craftsmanship, where we witnessed the delicate dance of fire and glass. The renowned Andres & Chapman Glassblowers, veterans of the festival for an impressive 43 years, demonstrated the ancient art of glassblowing. Their skill and artistry were a testament to the enduring legacy of this time-honored craft. Nearby, the Glass Dragon offered a glimpse into their vibrant creations, each piece a masterpiece in its own right.

The Blacksmith at Phoenix Forge
The clang of metal upon anvil drew us to the Phoenix Forge, where a blacksmith forged a mighty sword before our very eyes. The rhythmic hammering and the shower of sparks painted a vivid picture of the medieval forge. This tribute to the artisans of old was a stirring reminder of the craftsmanship that sustained empires and built legends.

Transforming into a High Elf
In the spirit of transformation, I sought out the purveyors of whimsical adornments to procure a pair of High Elf silicone ears. Custom-fitted and colored to match mine own complexion, these ears were a cherished memento of our visit. The artisans promised to re-color them upon request, ensuring they remain a fitting accessory for future escapades.
A Feast for the Senses
While we did not partake in the culinary delights on offer, the aroma of roasted turkey legs and sizzling tacos filled the air, tempting even the most disciplined of appetites. Next time, I vow to partake in the much-lauded Steak on a Stake, a delicacy highly recommended by festival regulars. The myriad food options promised a feast fit for a king, with flavors to satisfy every palate.
A Marketplace of Wonders
The festival's marketplace was a treasure trove of period-era finery and unique creations. Stalls overflowed with hand-blown glass, exquisite jewelry, and armor fit for a knight. From rag dolls to ornate swords and shields, the offerings were as diverse as they were enchanting. Here, one could procure the perfect ensemble or keepsake to commemorate their visit.

The Missed Grand Parade
Alas, time did not permit us to witness The Grand Parade, a spectacle we have heard spoken of in reverent tones. Nor could we attend the many other performances that dotted the festival's schedule. Yet, this absence only fueled our desire to return, clad in full costume and armed with a season pass to immerse ourselves fully in the magic of the renaissance festival.

As the sun dipped below the horizon, casting a golden glow over the King's Realm, we took our leave with hearts full of joy and memories to cherish.
